In my previous post, I talked about the importance of planning your lessons out for the week on Sunday. Planning lessons for an entire week can seem daunting but it doesn’t have to be. For each subject (Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies) think about one thing you want to focus on for the entire week. Then, map it out on a grid (as featured below).

How do you know what to focus on for the week? You may have content to work with from your teacher already and you may not! If you are at square one with no content, look up the Standards of Learning (SOL) in your state for the grade level you need. Here is the website for the SOLs in Virginia: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/

In Virginia, you click on what you need by subject on the far right side of the page. As an example, choose “Mathematics”, go to grade three, and click on the PDF.

Once in the PDF, under Measurement and Geometry, you know that under section 3.9 that your child should be able to tell time to the nearest minute, using analog and digital clocks by the end of third grade. When working from the SOLS, you at least know that you are choosing something age and grade level appropriate.

I hope this post will help you feel less anxious about getting set up for the week. If you would like access to the simple lesson planning grid, please reach out to me in the contact section of the blog! I look forward to hearing from you.
